Binational Activities
Overview:

Since many of the migrants and their family members live on both sides of the US-Mexico border and travel frequently between countries, it is necessary to promote HIV prevention on a binational basis in order to stem the tide of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in this population.

To help plan and direct our binational work, Farmworker Justice invited organizations from both the US and Mexico to form a Binational Leadership Group Against AIDS.  Under the auspices of this group, we sponsored a binational promotores de salud conference, Bridging Borders to Prevent AIDS (March 2004) and published a Binational Directory of AIDS Prevention Services (May 2005). In addition, FJ, working with a local coalition of groups, conducted a pilot Sister City project, in which promotores de salud outreach and education activities were coordinated in both McAllen, TX and Reynosa, Tamaulimpas, Mexico (two communities that share an international border).

Binational Directory of AIDS Services

Farmworker Justice has updated the Binational Directory of AIDS Services for the countries of United States and Mexico (click to download in pdf).  The purpose of this directory is to maintain a continuity of services for people who are affected and infected with HIV/AIDS and travel across the border on a regular basis. The tool is to be used by health service providers to locate services for migrant workers traveling from receiving to sending communities. The directory is comprehensive, although is not exhaustive. If you are aware of HIV/AIDS services in either Mexico or the United States that are not included in the directory please download and complete the referral form (in MS Word format) and send it to us.

There are other service provider directories that cover different regions in the United States and Mexico.  The three AIDS Education and Training Centers (AETC) serving the US/Mexico border region launched www.aetcborderhealth.org, an online resource directory that provides information on HIV/AIDS resources in the U.S./Mexico border region.  AETCs are the training arm of the Health Resource Service Administration (HRSA).  The directory brings together very useful epidemiological data and county-level overviews of HIV/AIDS in the border states as well as important local resources.
Another useful directory can be found at www.aids-sida.org/principal.html. This directory is sponsored by the organization Amigos Contra el SIDA and provides information on the HIV/AIDS services available in each Mexican state along with statistics and contact information for the state and federal health authorities.
